Sun.Star SuperBalita remains committed @ 12

SUN.STAR SuperBalita, sister publication of Sun.Star Davao published in Bisaya, is celebrating its 12th anniversary Sunday.

The maiden publication of SuperBalita hit the streets on July 24, 1999. Since then, it saw a steady growth in terms of circulation under the leadership of the late Ely M. Luciano, who was the officer-in-charge of SuperBalita when it published its first issue and later became the managing editor.

He used his knowledge and experience as a broadcaster to improve the newspaper's operation to overcome the challenges in almost 12 years of serving the community.

After 11 years of serving the company, Sun.Star SuperBalita lost Luciano to cancer on January 29, 2011.

His untimely death prompted some adjustments on the part of their staff in running the paper.

"After his death, we were sad because we lost a good friend and a managing editor who is very kind and understanding to his subordinates," now SuperBalita managing editor Alger Dura said.

Editor-in-chief Stella A. Estremera took over the helm.

"I am very thankful because right after the death of Sir Ely, Ma'am Stella guided us in our daily operations," Dura said.

Luciano was the one who guided SuperBalita staff with the mantra "Mantalaan sa tibuok Pamilya."

"Sir Ely was the one who spearheaded our campaign against pornography way back in February 2010," Dura said.

"We were able to discuss pornography issue through Matud Nila Section. And, we brought the issue to the Integrated Gender and Development Division (IGDD) and the City Council," he added.

He said they succeeded in their campaign since their competitor ceased to publish lewd stories.

"We attribute the so-called success to our beloved former Mayor and now Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte because he was the one who ordered a stop to publishing lewd stories," he explained.

Behind the success of SuperBalita is the professional management of the publication's president Orlando P. Carvajal and the unwavering support of its readers.

Challenges

Today, SuperBalita is ready to face challenges in the future to make sure that accurate news, balance commentaries will be brought to their readers.

"As we continue serving the people, we humbly accept the responsibility to inform, and educate the public as one of our missions as journalists," Dura said.

He said they will regularly conduct a series of surveys to get the pulse of their readers and know what they want.

"Rest assured that we will continue to give the best that we can. Give factual, no bias news. Serving the public will always be our priority," Dura added.

Social responsibility

In line with its 12th year celebration, SuperBalita conducted a free dental clinic for Kindergarten pupils of the Gentle Touch School of Davao City on July 22.

"We initiated this activity because we are aware that we have also a corporate social responsibility. Fifty five pupils benefited the project," Dura said.

Pupils were given free toothbrushes and toothpaste by Sun.Star Davao general manager Tessie A. Paña assisted by Human Resource head Vic Purgatorio, Administrative officer Donna Cuyos, Circulation supervisor Leo Ocot, and SuperBalita reporters Rhona Goc-ong and Marizz Robilla.

The activity was made possible through the support of Dumoy barangay captain and representative of Liga ng mga Barangay Dr. Jessie Mar Culaste, Dr. Joebert Culaste and Dr. Julius M. Mirto of Beta Sigma Fraternity.

"On Tuesday (July 26) we will be raffling out one motorcycle, and gift certificates for the winners of our Super Suki Promo Part 3," Dura added.

More activities are in line as SuperBalita lives up to its commitment in serving Dabawenyos through responsive community journalism.
