Let some things not change
K.M. Lacida

I FEEL nostalgic.

I just came back from an event in my high school Alma Mater where I had been engaged in some conversation with my batch mates. Some of them had already started wearing outfits designed for summer and beach get-a-ways. Some were putting colorful powders on their cheeks that could be mistaken for slap marks. You could also see silver particles shimmering around their eyes.

I took out my handy mirror and checked my oval face.

I think I need a new look too.

The guys on the other hand, are now taller than me. The last time I checked my height against theirs, I stood out as a towering figure. Now, I’ve become a midget.

The sight of my beloved friends gave me a heart-breaking feeling. I remembered all the things our batch did. The fights, the apologies, the parties, the recollections, the gatherings, the open forums and the rare bonding times. As I looked at them with pain in my heart, I see individuals busy with their laboratory exams, relationships, careers, gigs and other block mates.

We’re no longer little cubs playing with each other beside our dear Lioness, our Alma Mater. We’ve become Lions and Lionesses ourselves, looking for prey to pounce on and mates to mesmerize.

We may not be together anymore, but we will always be with each other. Our little moments with each other before shaped and instilled some virtues and treasures within us.

As we busily updated our pals about our individual lives, Alva suddenly appeared out of the crowd with a huge smile and a heaven-reaching wave just like before.

“Hi, Krista!”

Some things change. Some remains the same.

Beneath the stylish combinations of blouses with uneven cuts on Prissy, she’s still the same friendly, cheerful and fun-loving gal. Behind the unique strokes of color on Luzill’s face shines the beauty she will always be known for. Behind Pido’s gentlemanly treatment of his lovable Lira, is still the same old comic freak. (And Luzill still has a crush on him.)

Let some things not change.
