Homegrown music

HIS name has become almost synonymous with Davao's performing arts and all its nuances. The kaliweteng gitarista has indeed carved his name in the consciousness of the art-oriented.

But like all endeavors in this city where appreciation is rarely manifested, Popong Landero's music and beats just rumble on in the background. Just as it did last Friday at the People's Park with the "Dinagayday Sa Mga Banikhanong Awit," a showcase of Mindanao's homegrown artists.

The mini concert was set up by the Popong Landero Organization and Kalumon Performing Ensemble in a bid to popularize the kind of music, beats, and rhythm that has become the background of the people's lives in Mindanao.

Lethargic as the art world in Davao is, Popong and his motley crew of artists play on; his six albums made through two decades is but a show of persistence of never giving up on the soul of the city.

Just last year, Popong launched his sixth album, "Bahaghari Tayo", an 11-track album locally recorded and produced. The title track, also entitled "Bahaghari Tayo" was chosen as the official theme song of last year's Araw ng Dabaw celebration.

Befor Bahaghari, there was Ayayayayay (1987), Laylay sa Sidlakan (1993), Kamay Ni Laan (1996), Impact 2000 (1998) and Seleksyon (2002).
