All set for Gen. Alvarez Day

ALL is set for the simple yet meaningful commemoration Sunday of the “Dia di General Vicente Alvarez” (Gen. Vicente Alvarez Day), a Zamboangueño revolutionary hero, organized by the local government by virtue of a city ordinance.

It is now the 6th year since the commemoration was institutionalized. It is aimed to drum up awareness on the contributions and the heroism of Alvarez.

The special event marks the day when Alvarez led the fight for sovereignty resulting to the surrender of Spanish forces led by Governor-General Diego de los Rios on May 18, 1899 at Fort Pilar.

The activities will kick off with a wreath-laying ceremony at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Plaza General Vicente Alvarez to be led by Mayor Ma. Isabelle Climaco-Salazar, first district Rep. Celso Lobregat and and second district Rep. Lilia Nuño.

From the plaza, Salazar said the event will move to the City Hall lobby where a brief program to be highlighted by oratorical presentations on the life of General Alvarez by two college students namely Eunice Canoy, a BEED-SPED student from Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) and Rovic John Eslao, a BEED student of the Ateneo de Zamboanga University (ADZU).

It will be followed by a commemorative mass at 5 p.m. at the Our Lady of the Pillar Shrine.

The observance of Dia di General Vicente Alvarez is pursuant to City Ordinance 334 setting May 18 of every year as Dia de General Vicente S. Alvarez in recognition to his feats.

The same Ordinance also named Plaza Roma situated at the Corner of Don Pablo Lorenzo and Zaragoza Streets and Gen. Alvarez Street as Plaza Vicente S. Alvarez. (Bong Garcia)
