Zambo students receive scholarship grants

ZAMBOANGA City Mayor Celso Lobregat on Wednesday urged the 110 City Government scholars to take advantage of the opportunity given to them by finishing their studies and achieve a brighter future for them and their families.
Lobregat said during the awarding of scholarship certificates to students who are enrolled at the Western Mindanao State University (WMSU), Zamboanga City State Polytechnic College (ZCSPC) and Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology (ZSCMST).

The City Government's scholarship program, which started in 2009 is pursuant to Ordinance 332, granting academic scholarships to poor but deserving students.
Lobregat said the City Government scholars had been chosen from the top 10 of the class from different public secondary schools in the city and are required to maintain a passing grade of 2.0 or its equivalent in their course.
Of total 110 program beneficiaries, 80 are enrolled at WMSU, 12 at ZCSPC while 18 are enrolled at ZSCMST.
"Please do your best in your studies. I really want all of you to finish your studies," Lobregat told the scholars before releasing the certificates Wednesday at the City Hall conference room.
The first batch of scholars (school year 2009-2010) composed of 67 students while the second batch (school year 2010-2011) composed of 72 students--all under the academic.
Most of them are taking up four-year courses while some are taking up five-year courses.
Under the ordinance, each scholar is entitled to P5,000 tuition per semester. Any excess amount, if there is any, will be given to them.
Aside from academic scholars, the ordinance likewise provides technical-vocational scholarship grants for out-of-school youths and unemployed adults who are at least high school graduates, or passers of the Philippine Educational Placement Test (PEPT), or Alternative Learning Education (ALE) graduates, or other recognized alternative educational system for High School equivalency, pre-qualified by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), or those who passed the accreditation for Voc-Tec terminal course or courses that do not exceed six months.
A number of students have also benefited from the voc-tech scholarship during the first two years of the program.
The City Government scholarship program is being implemented by the City Human Resource Management Office.
