PAGADIAN CITY -- Government forces have arrested a suspected hardcore member of the Abu Sayyaf in the island province of Basilan, a top military official said Friday.
Colonel Alexander Macario, commander of the Special Operations Task Force-Basilan (SOTF-B), said the arrest was made around 5:30 a.m. Friday in the village of Tandung Ahas, Lamitan City.
Macario identified the suspected Abu Sayyaf member as Jal Idris alias Jahari Idris, who was arrested following intelligence surveillance.
Macario did not say the extent of Idris's participation in atrocities committed by the Abu Sayyaf group, but said the suspect is facing kidnapping for ransom case before the Regional Trial Court (RTC) branch 2 in Isabela City, Basilan.
Idris was arrested on the strength of a warrant of arrest issued by the RTC, Macario added.
The suspect was taken to the headquarters of the SOTF-B at Camp Luis Biel in Isabela City for debriefing and proper disposition.
The troops are continuously pursuing the remaining Abu Sayyaf leaders and followers in Basilan province, Macario said.
