Task group launched for bizwoman’s abduction

8 drug users fall

EIGHT suspected drug users were arrested while the alleged drug pusher eluded arrest in an anti-drug operation in Zamboanga City, the police reported Wednesday.

Arrested were the following: Absmar Sampang, 18; Romel Natividad, 36; Mark Gonzales, 30; Ferdausa Ellong, 29; Majid Hasim; Basri Usab; Artimin Ahmad; and, Fatima Hasim.

BSP sets seminars on credit cards, finances

THE Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP)-Zamboanga Branch has scheduled a three-day seminar on credit card awareness and financial empowerment in Zamboanga City.

BSP-Zamboanga Acting Branch Head Vicente Celestial said the seminar will be held from August 27 to 29, the venue of which will be announced later.

Gunmen seize bizwoman in Labuan, Zamboanga

A BUSINESSWOMAN was abducted by gunmen clad in camouflage uniforms in Labuan village, Zamboanga City while her husband managed to escape, a top police official reported Tuesday.

Zamboanga City police director Angelito Casimiro identified the victim as Michelle Panes, 36, whose family runs a grocery store at Purok 5 in Labuan.

Measles, polio immunization set

THE Department of Health (DOH) is set to conduct mass immunization against measles and polio for children five years old below next month in Zamboanga Peninsula Region.

DOH Local Health Support Division chief Joshua Brillantes said they are targeting to immunize 422,919 children against measles and 496,470 on Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV).

Drug bureau to dialogue with courier firms

THE Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) is scheduled to hold a dialogue with the courier firms to stop the entry of prohibited drugs into the region.

PDEA Regional Director Joseph Latip had thought of holding the dialogue following observations that prohibited drug syndicates ship the contrabands through courier firms.

Power outages hit Zamboanga areas

THE National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) announced that investigation is underway to determine the root cause of the power outage that hit late Saturday in several areas in Zamboanga Peninsula.

Affected by the sudden power outage are the areas served by the Zamboanga City Electric Cooperative (Zamcelco), Zamboanga del Sur Electric Cooperative-2 (Zamsureco-2), and parts of the Zamboanga del Norte Electric Cooperative (Zaneco).

Outpost commander killed

AN OUTPOST commander of the Army Special Forces was killed in an accidental firing incident in the province of Zamboanga del Norte, the police reported Sunday.

The Zamboanga del Norte Police Office reported that the incident took place around 8:42 p.m. Friday at the Riverine Detachment at Sitio Gusa in the village of Calatunan, Sindangan town.

Twister victims get financial aid

THE City Government has released P80,000 financial assistance to families whose houses were destroyed by a twister that recently hit some areas in Zamboanga City.

Zambo allocates P21-M for PhilHealth program

ZAMBOANGA City Mayor Ma. Isabelle Climaco-Salazar said the City Government has allocated P21 million for the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth) program.

Salazar said the amount will be used for the renewal of the PhilHealth cards of 8,857 mostly indigenous people (IP) beneficiaries from the different villages in the city.

Soldier, pal killed

A MEMBER of the Philippine Marines and his friend were killed inside a gymnasium in the province of Zamboanga del Sur, the police said.

Police Regional Office-Zamboanga Peninsula (PRO-9) information officer-in-charge Inspector Dahlan Samuddin identified the fatalities as Merjun Disapor, 22, a Marine soldier assigned in Indanan, Sulu, and his friend, Renell Alastra.

Massive cleanup lessens dengue cases

ZAMBOANGA City Health Officer Dr. Rodelin Agbulos said the number of dengue cases declined by 153 last month compared to that in June this year in this city, because of massive cleanup.

Agbulos said the continuous clean-up drive coupled with anti-dengue advocacy has reduced the cases of dengue to 387 in July from 540 in June this year.

DILG holds IT training

Navy rescues 12 Badjaos

OPERATIVES of the Naval Forces Western Mindanao’s Task Force 62 rescued 12 of the 19 Badjaos who were aboard three motorized bancas that capsized off Sibutu, Tawi-Tawi, a military official said Friday.

Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom) Information Officer Captain Ma. Rowena Muyuela said four of the 12 rescued were children who were turned over to the custody of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in Bongao, the capital town of Tawi-Tawi.

Dumingag village official, wife killed

A VILLAGE official and his wife were killed while their two children were unharmed in a gun attack in the province of Zamboanga del Sur, the police reported Friday.

DILG announces Lupong Tagapamayapa Incentive Awards

Sayyafs attack plantation guards

A STONE breaker was killed by a stray bullet while two security personnel of a rubber plantation were unscathed following an attack perpetrated by the Abu Sayyaf bandits in Sumisip town, Basilan.

P2.3-M properties destroyed in 3 fire incidents

AT LEAST P2.3 million worth of properties went up in smoke in three separate fire incidents that hit the provinces of Zamboanga del Sur and Zamboanga del Norte, officials reported Thursday.

A Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) official said that P800,000 of the P2.3 million worth of properties were razed when a fire hit a closely-built community in the village of Balangasan, Pagadian City on Wednesday night.

7 Chinese fishermen rescued

SEVEN Chinese fishermen in distress were rescued by Filipino fishermen in the waters off Tawi-Tawi, a top Philippine Coastguard (PCG) official announced Wednesday.

Southwestern Mindanao Coastguard District spokesman Lieutenant Senior Grade Jomark Angue said the Chinese fishermen were rescued shortly after 3 a.m. Wednesday near the Municipality of Mapun, Tawi-Tawi.

DepEd, DSWD set joint feeding program

DILG completes water system project

Drug pusher falls, yields P100,000 in shabu

THE police have arrested a suspected drug pusher and seized an estimated P100,000-worth of prohibited drugs in Isabela City, the capital of Basilan province, an official said Wednesday.

Isabela City police commander Superintendent Albert Larubis identified the arrested suspect as Jinggoy Jahari, 25.

2 fishing enthusiasts killed

MOTORCYCLE-RIDING gunmen have killed two fishing enthusiasts in the province of Zamboanga del Norte, the police reported Tuesday.

Boulevard cleared of IDPs

THE Zamboanga City Government, in partnership with concerned government agencies, has started the massive clean-up and facelift to bring back the R.T. Lim or “Cawa-Cawa” Boulevard to its former glory.

THE Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) said the residents of Zamboanga City still enjoy good air quality.

DENR’s Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) Pollution Control Division chief Engineer Josefino Belocura said the Particulate Matter (PM) for good air quality ranges from 0-80 micrograms per normal cubic meters.

Health office asks media’s help in anti-dengue fight

ZAMBOANGA City Health Officer Dr. Rodelin Agbulos has tapped the assistance of the local media to help his office in the prevention and control of dengue fever as the rainy season approaches.

Agbulos said there has been a huge decrease in the number of dengue cases in July compared to that in June this year.
