ZAMBOANGA CITY -- A hostage taker was killed while two people, including a policeman, were injured in a hostage drama that took place Tuesday in this city.

The Zamboanga City Police Office said the incident happened shortly after 3 p.m. at a privately owned wharf in the village of Baliwasan, west of this city.

The police identified the slain hostage taker as Onal Kasim, 36, of Mapun municipality, Tawi-Tawi province.

Initial investigation showed that Kasim, armed with a bolo, held hostage the six-man crew of F/V Ruskie when the vessel had just moored at the private wharf.

Tuts Moreno, 47, a crew of F/V Ruskie, was allegedly stabbed by Kasim. Moreno, though wounded, has managed to escape and sought the assistance of the police.

Police Officer 2 Nurhussein Ilaji, a member of the Police Maritime Command detailed at a government-owned vessel moored nearby, and another policeman responded.

Kasim allegedly hacked Ilaji in the head, but the hostage taker died after he was fatally shot by Ilaji’s companion, who opened fire after seeing the hostage taker wounding his partner.

F/V Ruskie skipper Feliciano Alano told the police that Kasim is an employee of a municipal official in Mapun, Tawi-Tawi.

The town official had tasked Kasim to escort a cargo the former shipped to this city aboard F/V Ruskie, Alano said.

He added that Kasim has been acting strangely while sailing to this city. (Sunnex)
