12 killed, 19 wounded in Sulu clash

ZAMBOANGA CITY (Updated) — Twelve people, including seven Filipino Marines and five Abu Sayyaf bandits, were killed in a clash on Saturday as the military launched an offensive against al-Qaeda-linked gunmen.

Nine other Marines and about 10 Abu Sayyaf militants were wounded in the gunbattle that raged for an hour in a sparsely populated village on the fringes of the coastal town of Patikul in Sulu province, military spokesman Brigadier General Domingo Tutaan said.

Security ready for school opening

ZAMBOANGA Peninsula Police Director Juanito Vaño has ordered the implementation of a comprehensive security measure to ensure the protection of the students in time for the opening of classes in June 3 for school year 2013-2014.

Vaño said the security measures should address not only the protection of students from petty crimes but to include problems on traffic as well.

2 dead bodies found in rice field

TWO dead bodies of a fish vendor and a lumberjack were found in a rice field in a remote village in the province of Zamboanga del Norte, the police reported Saturday.

Found dead were Jessie Velasco, 37, a fish vendor, and Rafael Calla, 68, a lumberjack, both residents of Poblacion West village, Salug town, according to the report from the Zamboanga del Norte police command.

NFA to receive rice shipment

THE National Food Authority (NFA) will receive at least 280,000 bags of imported rice to augment the basic staple food stocks in Zamboanga City and of the three nearby provinces in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm).

NFA Provincial Manager Gaudencio Nuega said the rice shipment is set to arrive anytime.

Woman stabbed over jealousy by lover

A 24-YEAR-OLD staff of a cosmetic firm was stabbed and critically wounded by his live-in partner due to jealousy, the police said Friday.

The incident happened shortly after 12 noon Friday, according to the report of the Zamboanga City Police Office (ZCPO).

Public warned vs scam group

AN OFFICIAL of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has warned the public against the proliferation of systematized scam in Zamboanga area concerning right-of-way claims.

The warning was issued Friday by NGCP spokesperson laywer Cynthia Alabanza after they received reports that an organized group is contacting land owners who live or have properties along or under the transmission company’s lines and facilities.

Troops, NPA rebels clash

A SOLDIER was killed while three others, including a junior officer, were wounded in a clash between the government forces and New People’s Army (NPA) rebels in the boundaries of Zamboanga del Sur and Misamis Occidental provinces.

Zamboanga Peninsula police spokesman Ariel Huesca said the clash happened around 11 a.m. Wednesday in the boundary of Tambulig town, Zamboanga del Sur and Bonifacio town, Misamis Occidental.

Lending firm collectors shot

MOTORCYCLE-RIDING gunmen shot and killed a lending firm collector and injured another in an attack in a west coast village of Zamboanga City, a police official said Thursday.

Senior Inspector Edilberto Alvarez, Police Station 9 commander, identified the fatality as Bemilio Islanan, who died before reaching a hospital.

School gets electricity, computers

8 hurt in vehicular accident

Army joins ‘Brigada Eskwela’

THE Army’s 101st Infantry Brigade headed by Colonel Apolinario Alobba has assigned personnel to join in the week-long “Brigada Eskwela” of the Department of Education (DepEd) in selected public schools within the military’s Area of Responsibility (AOR).

The brigade’s AOR include the entire province of Zamboanga del Norte, which comprises of two cities and 25 municipalities; Misamis Occidental, which comprises three cities and 14 towns; and the municipalities of Molave, Tambulig, Josefina, Mahayag and Dumingag in the province of Zamboanga del Sur.

City Hall building repair complete

Man killed due to family dispute

Man, 60, dies in motorcycle crash

9 nabbed for violating wildlife protection act

Zamboanga City buys new fire trucks

THE City Government of Zamboanga has purchased four new fire trucks amounting to P23.6 million as a fulfillment of its commitment to help the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) enhance its emergency response capability.

One of the four fire trucks were delivered and is set to be turned over on Monday, May 20, to Zamboanga City Fire District (ZCFD), Mayor Celso Lobregat said.
