A SQUAD leader of the New People’s Army (NPA) surrendered to the government authorities in the province of Zamboanga del Sur, a top military official reported.
Lieutenant Colonel Victor Tanggawohn, Army’s 53rd Infantry Battalion commander, identified the NPA returnee as Roger Apog, alias Ka Rey or Ka Bajik.
Tanggawohn said Apog belongs to the NPA’s Western Mindanao Regional Party Committee operating in the hinterlands of Zamboanga del Sur province.
Tanggawohn said Apog surrendered around 6 a.m. Wednesday to soldiers who were undertaking peace and development works in the village of Kahayagan, Bayog, Zamboanga del Sur.
Apog yielded a Garand rifle with ammunition, Tanggawohn added.
More NPA rebels are expected to surrender soon brought about by the development taking place in the hinterlands, he said.
“Our soldiers are now at sitios and villages doing bayanihan works which are well appreciated by the people in the community,” he said. (Bong Garcia)
