A HAWKSBILL sea turtle (Eretmochelys imbricate) was safely rescued after it was washed ashore in Zamboanga City, an official said Tuesday.

Engineer Rene Dela Cruz, chief of the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (Cenro), said the sea turtle was rescued around 10:30 p.m. Sunday in R.T. Lim Boulevard in this city.

Dela Cruz said the turtle was seen washed ashore by a group of passersby who immediately reported to the policemen assigned at the R.T. Lim Boulevard.

The policemen reported the incident to 117, which informed the local government and led to its safe rescue, Dela Cruz said.

He said the turtle is now in the custody of the marine specialists at the Zamboanga State College of Marine Science and Technology.

The recovered turtle will be release back to its habitat anytime this week, he said.

The hawksbill sea turtle is a critically endangered sea turtle belonging to the family Cheloniidae.
