IN LINE with the government’s advocacy on preserving marine life, the City Government released on Wednesday a green sea turtle in the waters off Paseo del Mar in Zamboanga City.
The turtle was rescued around 10 p.m. Sunday at R.T. Lim Boulevard., fronting Brent Hospital and Colleges Inc. (BHCI) by OCENR personnel together with the ecosystems management specialists from the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (Penro).
Locally known as “tortuga,” the turtle weighed 55 kilograms with a carapace length of 83 centimeters and 75 centimeters in width.
The green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) was estimated to be about 20 to 30 years old.
The turtle may have been swept by the sea current since around this time it is considered their mating season in shallow waters near nesting beaches.
When marine turtles reach breeding age of around 20 to 30 years old, they travel back to their place of birth to nest. (Bong Garcia)
