Lamitan port expansion starts

LAMITAN CITY, Basilan – Mayor Roderick Furigay, Governor Jum Akbar and Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm) Governor Mujiv Hataman on Wednesday led the groundbreaking ceremony for the expansion of the port in this city.
Furigay said the expansion project is worth P40 million the funding was provided by the Armm.
He said the expansion project once completed would enable the port of this city to accommodate “more big vessels.”

At present, the port of Lamitan could only accommodate a single vessel at one time, according to Furigay.
Akbar foresees an increase in the trade and commerce in this city once the port expansion project is completed.
This as Akbar noted that residents of nearby towns like Tuburan, Tipo-Tipo, Mohammad Ajul, Akbar, Ungkaya Pukan Al-Barka buy their household needs in this city.
Hataman said he envisions in making the port of this city as the direct link not only of the province but of Armm to other major ports in the country.
The improvement of the port could help hasten the economic and social development of this city, Hataman said. (Bong Garcia)
