MAYOR Celso Lobregat has highly praised the achievements of the Monteverde 4-H Club of Culianan village on Monday.
The group bagged this year’s Gawad Saka Search for Most Outstanding Young Farmer Association during a national competition launched by the Department of Agriculture (DA) recently.
The village of Culianan is located 13 kilometers east from City Hall.
The 61-member Monteverde 4-H Club bested other contestants from all over the country for its vegetable gardening, piggery, food processing and flower arrangement projects in the group level and individual projects for water impounding system, ornamental and piggery and poultry-raising.
Lobregat said the group brought honor to Zamboanga and proved that farming remains to be a potent industry in this city.
Lobregat hoped that Monteverde 4-H Club’s triumph will inspire other young farmer associations in this city to better their capabilities and ultimately help promote self-reliance and self-sufficiency.
The group, headed by president Marvin Alviar, paid a courtesy call on Lobregat at City Hall on Monday, where the chief executive, elated by the group’s feat, also shelled out P10,000 as incentive for the group.
The Monteverde 4-H Club will receive a plaque and P150,000 for the advancement of its various projects.
The awarding ceremony is slated on October 29 in Malacañang with President Benigno Aquino III as guest of honor.
Of the 61 members of the Monteverde 4-H Club, 35 are regular members, 18 are kiddie members (from Kinder 2 to 10 years old) while eight are junior members.
The group is supported and assisted by the City Agriculturist Office under Diosdado Palacat through Lorna Bautista, City 4-H Coordinator; Nerida Garcia, Gawad Saka Coordinator; Soraida Usman, 4-H District Coordinator and Bella Esperancilla. (Bong Garcia)
