GOVERNMENT militia forces have repulsed an attack staged by the New People’s Army (NPA) rebels in the hinterlands of Misamis Occidental, a military official said Monday.
Captain Alberto Caber, spokesman of the Army’s 1st Infantry Division, said the attack took place around 7:38 p.m. Sunday in Barangay Holoyohoy, Tangub City, Misamis Occidental.
Caber said the attack was staged by more or less 15 NPA rebels from the Western Mindanao Regional Party Committee (WMRPC).
The NPA rebels who were armed with high-powered firearms positioned themselves on a heavy vegetated area some 100 meters away from the detachment and opened fire, Caber said.
The militiamen stationed in the detachment returned fire that resulted to a five-minute firefight, he said.
The NPA rebels fled to different directions after failing to overpower the militiamen based on the detachment, he said.
None of the militiamen were either killed or injured as it was not also clear whether the NPA attackers incurred casualties, he added.
All of the detachment and military outpost were ordered to strengthened security to thwart further attacks, he said.
