THE Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), through the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (Cenro)-West, is conducting a campaign to inform and educate the public on the proper use and disposal of plastic bags as well as other waste materials in Zamboanga City.
Ben Acana, head of the Cenro-West, said there is really a need to inform and educate the public especially households on proper use and disposal of plastic bags in accordance with Republic Act 9003 otherwise known as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.
Acana issued the statement following his observation that most of the garbage collected from the residential areas composed of plastic materials.
Acana said the improper disposal to include the burning of waste materials including plastics cause air pollution.
Acana said that plastics also clog the drainage system and pollutes the water thereby affecting marine life once disposed in rivers and seas.
“What must be done is to recycle these plastics, segregate their garbage, and throw your respective waste in the proper place,” Acana explained.
“The households must be educated on how to dispose their solid waste,” he added.
Acana is an advocate of good management of solid waste. (Bong Garcia)
