59 human trafficking victims rescued

THE Sea-Based Anti-Trafficking Task Force (SBATTF) have rescued 59 human trafficking victims and arrested a suspected illegal recruiter in Zamboanga City Wednesday morning.

Chief Inspector Alexander Lorenzo, field office head of the Philippine Center on Transnational Crime (PCTC) Western Mindanao, said the victims were rescued around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday at a private wharf in the village of Baliwasan, 3.5 kilometers west of the city.

Lorenzo, however, withheld the identity of the arrested suspected illegal recruiter except in saying he is from Ozamis City.

Lorenzo said the rescued victims composed of 31 men, 17 women and 11 children, who were recruited in Davao Region and Zamboanga Peninsula to work in palm oil plantations, house helpers, among others.

He said the victims were rescued aboard a wooden-hulled ferry that was set to leave for Taganak, Turtle Island town, Tawi-Tawi, where they will travel to Sandakan, Sabah, en route to their working places.

The rescued victims were turned over to the custody of the Department of Social Welfare and Development; while the suspect was placed under the custody of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group for investigation and filing of appropriate case in court, Lorenzo said.
