THE residents of Siocon, Zamboanga del Norte can now enjoy clean running water right in their community.
The TVIRD Resource Development Inc. (TVIRD), through the company’s Social Development Management Plan (SDMP), provided a water system to more or less 2,000 residents in the village of Candiz, Siocon.
The installation involved the construction of a catchment structure, which serves as a filter for the water source to remain clean and a large reservoir to service the residents in the village.
TVIRD’s manager Joel Alasco said the Philippine Mining Act of 1995 stipulated that a company should institute social development projects to communities affected by its mining activities.
The TVIRD operates a copper and zinc mine in Sitio Canatuan in the village of Tabayo.
The newly-built water system was officially turned over to the officials of Candiz village.
Candiz councilman Arturo Bascon said they finally have a water system for the first time since the village was founded 36 years ago through the courtesy of TVIRD.
“First, the company repaired our road, which linked us to Siocon town proper -- and now, this new water system,” Bascon said as he lamented that the inadequate, if not absent, attention of the past local government administration in helping the village of Candiz.
Bascon added the residents get water for daily use either from creeks, ponds or streams that sometimes turn murky during wet season and arid on dry season for the past several years.
