A FISHERMAN was killed by a needlefish locally known as “balo” in a freak accident while fishing off shore east of Zamboanga City, the police reported Tuesday.
The Police Station 4 said the incident took place shortly after midnight Tuesday in the fishing ground off Talaban village.
The fatality was identified as Jesus Guerrero, 63, a resident of Sitio Gapuh, Talabaan. He died on the spot.
Investigation showed the victim was pulling the hooks while fishing together with his son, Marvin, and brother, Felicito, when a needlefish suddenly jumped from the water, striking the victim on the throat.
The needlefish, which is about two feet long, was caught and was taken home by Marvin and Felicito.
Felicito said they cut the snout of the needlefish and preserved it to be buried together with his late brother.
