A PERSON suspected to be a bomb carrier was killed in an explosion in the province of Zamboanga del Sur, police said Wednesday.
The blast occurred around 9:35 p.m. Tuesday along the national highway of Tapodoc village, Labangan, Zamboanga del Sur, said Police Regional Office (PRO)-Zamboanga Peninsula information officer Ariel Huesca.
He said the body of the unidentified person, whose arms and head were blown-off, was found around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday by the technicians of a telecommunications firm.
Huesca said the technicians were repairing the cables, which were damaged by the explosion, when they found the body in rice paddies some 15 meters away from the blast site.
The 9th Regional Public Safety Battalion's explosive ordnance demolition (EOD) and Labangan policemen have recovered another unexploded bomb while sifting through the explosion site during a post-blast investigation.
Huesca said the unexploded bomb is a cellular phone-triggered explosive with a 60-milimeter mortar shell as the main charge.
The EOD conducted disruption procedure on the recovered bomb, he said.
He said the Labangan police command is conducting a follow-up investigation to identify the victim, and determine the motive of the incident.
