THE police are readying the filing of charges against a village official in the municipality of Labason, Zamboanga del Norte, for illegal fishing.
The Zamboanga del Norte Police Office (ZDNPO) reported that the charges for violation of Republic Act 8550, otherwise known as the Philippine Fisheries Code of 1998, will be filed against Rogelio Barillo, 54.
The ZDNPO said that Barillo, a councilman in Barangay Malintuboan, Labason, has been tagged as the owner of fine mesh net locally known as "baling-baling" that was confiscated by policemen around 5 p.m. Saturday.
Prior to the confiscation of the fishing gear, Labason Municipal Agriculture Officer Leonardo Daligdig reported to the police about an illegal fishing activity offshore Barangay Bobongan.
Initial investigation conducted by Bobongan village chief Jaime Datoy and watchman Erwin Romero revealed that an illegal fishing activity transpired, and that the suspects abandoned their fish net at the shoreline.
The police immediately deployed a team of personnel, resulting in the confiscation of the baling-baling.
The use of baling-baling is a violation of Section 89, Article II of Chapter VI of Republic Act 8550, the police said. (Bong Garcia)
