Wednesday, October 2, 2013
DEPARTMENT of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Corazon Soliman said they have not authorized any person or group to solicit financial assistance for the thousands of evacuees in Zamboanga City.
Soliman issued the statement as she warned the public against unscrupulous individuals and groups who are soliciting funds allegedly for the thousands of families displaced by the standoff.
Soliman issued the warning after receiving report that some unscrupulous people are using her name and the name of the agency in soliciting funds.
Soliman said that the DSWD is not conducting fund raising much more soliciting financial assistance for the standoff victims as the government still has sufficient financial resources for the continuing relief operation.
The cost of assistance given to the families displaced by the standoff has already reached P112.24 million.
The DSWD has provided P106.74 million of the total amount while the remaining P5.5 million are provided by the City Government -- P1.14 million -- and non-government organizations and other Government Organizations -- P4.34 million.
Soliman said those who wish to conduct fund raising campaigns for the Zamboanga standoff victims “may do so in their capacity as private individual or group.” However, she stressed that they need to get the necessary permit from the DSWD.
The standoff has displaced 23,794 families comprising of 118,819 individuals coming from 14 of the 98 barangays of the city.
The DSWD is still serving 19,103 families comprising of 102,401 individuals as of Monday. (Bong Garcia/Sunnex)
