THREE fishermen were arrested on two separate occasions in anti-illegal fishing campaign in the province of Zamboanga Sibugay, the police reported.
Arrested were Talib Akiral, Benjamin Makbol, and Garciano Arabejo Arestoteles, according to the Zamboanga Sibugay Police Office (ZSPO).
The ZSPO said that Akiral and Makbol were arrested around 7 a.m. Thursday offshore Lugay-Lugay village in the municipality of Alicia.
The police said that the policemen together with Alicia fishery law enforcement team led by Police Officer 3 Zaldy Tingting were conducting sea patrol when they -- Akiral and Makbol -- were fishing using fine mesh net locally known as “hampis.”
Confiscated from them were two motorized bancas and four rolls of fine mesh fishing nets, the use of which is in violation of the fishery ordinance.
Arestoteles, who was at the same area of Akiral and Makbol, was also arrested around 8:30 a.m., the police said.
Arestoteles was caught in the act engaged in illegal fishing with the used of fine mesh net locally known as “dombol,” the police said.
However, the police said all three fishermen were released after they paid the corresponding penalty stipulated in the Municipal Fishery Ordinance Number 67 of Alicia town.
