PARTICIPANTS of the procession for the feast day of the Our Lady of the Pillar in Zamboanga City are advised to refrain from bringing backpacks or sling bags “for security purposes,” City Administrator said Antonio Orendain Jr. said on Friday.
Orendain said that security measures will be intensified at the Cathedral and the Fort Pilar shrine, as well the procession’s route to ensure the protection of worshipers who are expected to join the celebration on October 12.
The procession will start at 2:30 p.m. Saturday from the Zamboanga Metropolitan Cathedral to the shrine of Our Lady of the Pillar in Barangay Zone IV where a pontifical mass will follow.
The feast day of Our Lady of the Pillar is the highlight of the annual Zamboanga Hermosa Festival celebration set every October of the year.
However, the City Government has decided to cancel the festival this year except for the religious activities due to the standoff between Moro rebels and government forces.
The standoff started when hundreds of Moro National Liberation Front rebels infiltrated Zamboanga City last September 9.
