The suspects were arrested around 5:20 p.m. Sunday in the waters of Bulawan Village in Payao, Zamboanga Sibugay, the police said.
The police have so far identified one of the five suspects as Malik Salikala, 41, owner of two motorized bancas involved in illegal fishing.
The other four suspects, whose identities were not immediately known, were the crew of Salikala’s motorized bancas, the police said.
Investigation showed that the combined police and military forces were conducting joint seaborne patrol when they intercepted two motorized bancas.
Police have confiscated four bottles of ammonium nitrate, one unit compressor and other fishing paraphernalia.
Appropriate charges are set to be filed against Salikala and his companions, the police said.
