THE local government, the police, and concerned authorities will start Monday a renewed campaign against violators of existing traffic rules and regulations to bring back law and order in the streets of Zamboanga City.

Assistant City Administrator Elmeir Apolinario said they will deploy traffic enforcers in strategic locations particularly those considered bottlenecks during peak hours to strictly implement laws.

Apolinario said the campaign will center on provisions mandated by the Traffic Code of the City (Ordinance 248), Sanitation Law (Ordinance 500), including traffic regulations mandated by the Land Transportation Office (LTO) as well as Republic Act (R.A.) 10054 and others.

The R.A. 10054 otherwise known as the Motorcycle Helmet Act of 2009 mandates all motorcycle riders to wear standard protective helmets while driving.

Apolinario advised the public to strictly observe traffic rules and driving courtesy as the City Government will intensify its traffic management efforts.

The advocacy campaign started last week and violations will be meted with sanctions and penalties, Apoliario warned.

Drivers are directed to stay on their lanes at all times, use seatbelts, observe driving courtesy and the designated fast and slow lanes, and avoidance of counterflows, reckless driving and beating the red light.

Apolinario said that license plates should not be obscured or tinted, and motorcycle riders must wear protective helmets.

Parking is not allowed within pedestrian lanes, intersections, along fire hydrants or highways, he said.

He said that drivers of both private and public vehicles should also note that loading and unloading of passengers is also not allowed in the middle of streets. (Bong Garcia)
