THIRTEEN people, including a policeman, survived while the lawman’s son went missing when the jeep they were riding fell into a river in the province of Zamboanga del Sur.
Zamboanga Peninsula police information officer Ariel Huesca said the incident happened around 7:30 a.m. Sunday in the village of Lower Salug Daku, Mahayag town.
Missing was Cyrus Jade Batingal, 11, son of Police Officer 1 (PO1) Nemesio Batingal, who owns the jeep that fell into the river.
Prior to the incident, Batinga, with three people including his son, was driving a military-type jeep loaded with sacks of fertilizers coming from the village of San Jose to the Poblacion village.
Batingals’ two companions were identified as Jerson Bacus, 19, and Jervy Bacus, 18, all residents of Poblacion village.
Huesca said that 10 other people hitched ride them when they reached the spill way in the village of Lower Salug Daku to cross towards the other side of the river.
Huesca said the jeep fell into the river as PO1 Batingal lost control of the steering due to strong current while they were at the middle of the over flowing spill way.
All of them survived the incident except for the son of Batingal who remained missing, Huesca said.
Nine of the hitch riders were identified as the following: Julito Paraiso, 52; Alberto Tejero, 38; Elizer Gaed, 31; Tarot Untag, 37; Roger Managing, 44; Derio Alvarico, 53; Edward Marababon, 36; Roel Quizon, 25; and, Alvin Parba, Huesca said. (Bong Garcia)
