ZAMBOANGA City Mayor Ma. Isabelle Climaco-Salazar has expressed her gratitude to the volunteers from Taiwan for donating temporary classrooms for students whose classroom buildings are being used by families displaced by the September 2013 standoff.

This as the Tzu Chi Foundation donated on Tuesday some 80 temporary classrooms at the national high school in the village of Talon-Talon, five kilometers east of Zamboanga City.

“We are delighted to receive these temporary classrooms for our children that will give them a better space that is conducive to learning. We are so thankful to the Tzu Chi,” Salazar said.

Salazar said her administration is doing everything possible to take care of students’ education, especially in schools that have been used by families displaced by the standoff last September.

The standoff started last September 9, when hundreds of Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) rebels have infiltrated the city.

“So, in spite of the crisis there is so much hope in our city as we are now finalizing the Zamboanga City Roadmap to Recovery and Reconstruction (Z3R) master plan,” Salazar said.

The tents cum temporary classrooms are made of steel and plastic boards (Polypropylene) donated by the Taiwan Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation through the Tzu Chi Zamboanga headed by Dr. Anton Lim.

The flooring of each of the classroom is concreted that are slightly elevated from the ground.

The tents are environment friendly, economical and conducive to learning as they absorb heat and noise. Each tent would cost US$7,200.

At least six temporary classrooms are being constructed at Talon-Talon National High School for the Grade 7 students. The classrooms will be ready for use next week.

Fourteen other tents are under construction at Talon-Talon Elementary School and the rest will be set up in the villages of Sangali, Tulungatung, Taluksangay and Ayala. (Bong Garcia)
