Wounded cop arrests hold-up suspect

AN INJURED policeman has managed to arrest one of the two gunmen that staged a robbery hold-up at a store in downtown Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay, the police said Saturday.

Arrested was Jovani Akil, 31, a resident of Don Andres, Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay, according to Zamboanga Peninsula police information officer Chief Inspector Ariel Huesca.

The wounded policeman was identified as Senior Police Officer 3 (SPO3) Romulo Flores of the Provincial Public Safety Company, Huesca said.

Huesca said that Flores was on his way home from duty when he crossed path with Akil and a companion who were about to escape after they robbed a store owned by Eduardo Salomes around 7:45 p.m. Thursday at Purok Mirasol in the village of Poblacion, Ipil town.

Huesca said that Flores, although wounded after he was shot by one of the suspects, have managed to arrest Akil.

He said a follow-up operation was launched aimed to arrest Akil’s companion, who managed to escape.

Akil and his companion, both armed with a calibre .45 pistol, have robbed P20,000 cash from Salomes, he said.
