A PUBLIC school teacher died while 11 others were wounded when a van they were riding fell into a ravine in the province of Zamboanga Sibugay, the police said Monday.
Zamboanga Peninsula police information officer Chief Inspector Ariel Huesca said the accident occurred at 11:30 a.m. Sunday along the national highway in the village of Bulaan, Buug, Zamboanga Sibugay.
Huesca said the victims are among the athletic delegation from the province of Sulu to the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao Athletic Association (Armaa).
Huesca identified the lone fatality as Abdulajid Lukman, 41, driver of the ill-fated van. He is part of the Sulu athletic delegation.
Huesca said the identities of the other victims were not immediately available, except that they include six athletes, school supervisor and principal, head teacher and a school nurse.
He said the wounded victims were admitted at the St. John General Hospital in the municipality of Buug, Zamboanga Sibugay.
The victims were traveling from Sulu bound for Marawi City via Zamboanga City when Lukman lost control of the van’s steering wheel. The van then plunged into a ravine while the driver was negotiating a curve in the village of Bulaan, Buug town, Huesca said.
Armm Governor Mujiv Hataman has immediately provided assistance to the victims.
The Armaa kicked-off Monday in Marawi City. The athletic event is being participated by the provinces of Basilan, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi.
