Fishing crew ‘accidentally’ shot dead

A FISHING boat crew died after he was accidentally shot by a fellow worker while fishing in the waters off Basilan, the police reported Tuesday.

Chief Inspector Ariel Huesca, Zamboanga Peninsula police information officer, identified the slain crew as Nonito Bati-on, 18, a resident of Salug, Zamboanga del Norte.

Huesca said Bati-on was allegedly shot by a fellow worker named Edward Hinaldo of Barangay Sibulao, Zamboanga City.

The victim was allegedly shot by accident around 9 p.m. Sunday while they were inside one of the cabins of the fishing boat, F/B Voyager Number 58 of the Oceanic Fishing Company.

Investigation showed that the suspect was fixing a caliber .45 pistol when he accidentally squeezed its trigger hitting the victim on his left thigh, Huesca said.

He said the boat captain brought the victim to the village of Cawit, Zamboanga City, and while on their way victim suffered loss of blood that led to his demise.

He said the suspect jumped overboard and escaped as they were approaching the shore of Cawit village.
