A NEW People’s Army (NPA) member was killed in a clash with government forces in the hinterlands of Surigao City, a military official said Monday.
Eastern Mindanao Command (Eastmincom) information officer Captain Alberto Caber said the clash ensued around 9:30 a.m. Sunday at Sitio Bedrock in the village of Mabini, Surigao City.
Caber said the 15-minute firefight ensued when troops conducted security patrol after receiving complaints from civilians about the extortion activities of the NPA rebels in the area.
The slain NPA rebel was not immediately identified.
Caber said the troops from the Army’s 30th Infantry Battalion have recovered an AK-47 rifle from the possession of the slain NPA member.
Eastmincom chief Lieutenant General Ricardo Rainier Cruz III has commended the 30th Infantry Battalion troops for providing security to the communities from the NPA’s extortion activities.
Cruz earlier reminded all military units in the area to undertake operations in coordination with the police forces.
“Our soldiers are on its effort for the protection of communities from the NPA’s extortion, deception and anti-people works,” Cruz said.
