A POLICEMAN escaped unscathed while one person was wounded in a shootout in the province of Zamboanga del Sur, the police reported Tuesday.

Police said the shootout happened around 10:13 p.m. Sunday at Purok Smith in the village of San Pedro, Pagadian City, the capital of Zamboanga Del Sur.

Wounded was John Modapil, 35, who allegedly shot Police Officer 1 (PO1) Wenrie Padayhag several times but missed.

The police said the shootout ensued when authorities responded to a report of illegal discharge of firearms, after Modapil opened fire when he saw the arriving policemen.

The suspect, although wounded, managed to flee when Padayhag and his companions took cover and returned fire.

Modapil was arrested in a pursuit operation and confiscated from his possession was a .45 caliber handgun, the police said.

The suspect, who sustained bullet wounds in his right thigh and ankle, was brought to a hospital.

Appropriate charges are set to be filed against the suspect, the police added.
