THE local police have made a breakthrough in the investigation over the gun-slaying of a judge in Zamboanga City, an official announced Monday.

This came about after Police Station 6 operatives arrested the alleged triggerman identified as Mohammad Alkhalidz Amisali along with two others in an anti-drug operation.

Zamboanga City police officer-in-charge Angelito Casimiro said Amisali was nabbed in the anti-drug operation Sunday afternoon at Sunrise Drive in Barangay Talon-Talon.

He said a witness has identified Amisali from a police lineup Monday as the triggerman in the February 28 killing of Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 14 Judge Reynerio Estacio Sr.

"During the investigation, we received information that one of them was involved in the Estacio killing," Casimiro said.

Estacio was driving his vehicle on the way to the court when allegedly shot by Amisali last February 28 at Narra Drive in Barangay Tugbungan.

Estacio's wife, Teresita, who was with him at the time of the incident, was unscathed.

Casimiro said that Estacio was killed due to the October 10, 2012 grenade-throwing case being heard at his sala.

The case involved a businesswoman who owns a hotel. She and her companion were not hurt in the grenade-throwing incident, but a cigarette vendor and a jeepney passenger were wounded.

Casimiro said that Amisali was one of the 11 people who were arrested in connection with the grenade-throwing incident. The suspect, however, was released along with two others for insufficiency of evidence.

Casimiro said Estacio denied last February 27 the petition to bail filed by the remaining eight accused.

On the same date, one of the eight accused turned state witness, further strengthened the case against the suspects.

"The turn of events triggered the February 28 killing of Judge Estacio," Casimiro said.

Investigation continues in a bid to establish the identity of the mastermind, he added.
