ZAMBOANGA CITY -- Abu Sayyaf bandits have seized a school official in the nearby island province of Basilan, a military official said Monday.

Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom) information officer Captain Maria Rowena Muyuela said the incident took place around 6:20 a.m. Monday at Sitio Mompol in the village of Libug, Sumisip, Basilan.

Muyuela identified the victim as Benita Latonia, 60, the principal of Manggal Elementary School in the municipality of Sumisip.

She said Latonia was onboard a passenger jeep together with other teachers on the way to the Provincial Division Office in Isabela City when five Abu Sayyaf bandits led by Abu Kik blocked the vehicle.

The suspects forcibly took Latonia and brought her to an unknown place.

Muyuela said that the military and police immediately conducted pursuit operations to rescue the victim.

The troops have blocked all possible exit points of the Abu Sayyaf bandits, but they are still scouring all possible hideouts of the suspects. (Sunnex)
