A MINER died while three others escaped death when a tunnel where they were working collapsed in the province of Zamboanga Sibugay, the police reported Sunday.

The Zamboanga Sibugay Police Office reported that the incident took place around 4 p.m. at a small-scale coal mine at Sitio Matidao in the village of Little Baguio, Imelda municipality.

Trapped to death was Jessie Moncada, a worker at a small-scale coal mine owned by Vicente Tamac, the police said.

Investigation showed that Moncada was trapped when the soil inside the tunnel collapsed while he and his three companions were about to come out, the police said.

Further investigation disclosed that Moncada’s companions, whose identities were withheld, tried to rescue him but failed because the victim’s body was already covered with soil and wood, the police said.
