PHILIPPINE Marines forces have killed five suspected Abu Sayyaf bandits and arrested another in a clash in the hinterlands of Sulu, a military official said Thursday.

Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom) information officer Captain Maria Rowena Muyuela, citing belated reports from Sulu, said the clash ensued around 7:25 p.m. Sunday in the village of Bangkal, Patikul municipality.

Muyuela said the clash ensued when the Abu Sayyaf bandits, who were aboard a vehicle, opened fire forcing the Marine troops manning the checkpoint to return fire.

“The incident transpired when the Marine troops conducting checkpoint signaled and tried to stop the approaching vehicle, but instead, they were fired upon by the passengers aboard said vehicle,” Muyuela said.

She said the vehicle sped away prompting the troops to launch a pursuit operation.

The troops recovered later the vehicle with a cadaver of a slain Abu Sayyaf bandit in it.

The vehicle and the cadaver was turned over to the local government of Patikul for proper disposition, she said.

Muyuela said the troops have received reports that the other four bandits were seriously wounded and “later died in an undisclosed area.”

Meanwhile, Muyuela said an Abu Sayyaf bandit was arrested around 9:30 a.m. Sunday in the village of Bungkaung, also in the Municipality of Patikul.

She said the bandit was driving a motorcycle when arrested by Marine troops manning a checkpoint.

Muyuela said the arrested bandit is a follower of Abu Sayyaf Group mid-level leader Ninok Sapari, whose group was responsible in the series of kidnappings in Sulu, as well as the harassment in Bungkaung Detachment April 13.

She said the arrested bandit as well as his motorcycle was turned over to the police for appropriate action.
