8 Chinese, 3 Filipinos arrested for illegal mining

COMBINED police and environment authorities have arrested eight Chinese nationals and three Filipinos for illegal mining in Pagadian City, the capital of Zamboanga del Sur province.

Pagadian City police commander Superintendent Glenn Dulawan said they were arrested in an anti-mining operation Monday at Labangan River in the village of Lower Sibatang, Pagadian City.

Dulawan identified the arrested Chinese nationals as follows: Liu Gi Yi, 29; Chung Yong De, 27; Zhang Shu Kei, 24; Duan Guang Zong, 55; Lui Chang Yin, 50; Xiao Min, 36; Tang Zihan, 25; and a certain Dongdong, 39;

The three Filipinos were identified as: Jennilyn Ramirez, 25, the group's chief cook; Roy Damondamon; and, Jose Sabroso.

Dulawan said they were arrested by combined policemen and personnel from the Provincial Environment Office, which is under the office of the provincial governor.

He said the arresting team has confiscated two back hoes and several doormats being used as filters of gold ores they extract from Labangan River.

He said they have coordinated with the Bureau of Immigration and it was learned that the Chinese nationals are holders of passports and tourist visas.

Meanwhile, he said that charges have been filed Wednesday before the City Prosecutor's Office for violation of the Philippine Mining Act of 1995 and the Philippine Clean Water Act of 2004 against the arrested Chinese and their Filipino companions.

Dulawan said also included in the charge sheet is Rene Bersales, who is at large. He added that the arrested suspects identify Bersales as their "boss."
