A SUSPECTED Abu Sayyaf bandit facing three counts of kidnapping cases was wounded and captured following a brief chase and shootout with joint police and military forces in the hinterlands of Zamboanga del Norte.
The police identified the bandit as Najer Ajilol, who was captured around 7:45 a.m. Thursday at Purok Mambong in the village of Candiz, Siocon, Zamboanga del Norte.
The police said that Ajilol is facing three counts of kidnapping for ransom before a Court in Zamboanga City and that corresponding warrant has been issued for his arrest.
Prior to his capture, the police said that Ajilol was sighted by members of the “eye of the barangay” in the village of Matiag, Siocon.
Combined police and military forces have established checkpoints in all possible exits of the town and intercepted Ajilol, who was driving a motorcycle, at Sitio Canatuan in the village of Tabayo.
The police said that Ajilol, when asked to present firearm’s license, drew his gun and fired toward the troops, prompting the lawmen to return fire.
Ajilol managed to escape by jumping into a ravine, prompting the lawmen to launch a manhunt operation that resulted in his capture following a brief shootout at Sitio Mambong in the village of Candiz, the police said.
The suspect was brought to a hospital in Ipil, the capital of the nearby Zamboanga Sibugay town, since he was wounded in the shootout.
The arresting team recovered from the suspect’s possession a .45 caliber pistol with ammunition and a hand grenade, the police said. (Bong Garcia)
