Mining firm to adopt a school-A A +A

THE Atro Mining-Vitali Inc. (AMVI) is eyeing the possibility of supporting local public schools in Zamboanga City's east coast this year through the Adopt-A-School scheme.
"The plan is to adopt a school or schools within Vitali District, especially those that need it the most," AMVI Community Relations Officer Francis Malones said Tuesday in a statement.
Malones said AMVI would like to underline the importance of education in development and in the upliftment of families.
Malones said that the AMVI makes literacy program a major component in its Community Development Program (CDP) to help the government address the literacy problem at least in Vitali District, east of the city.
"We are putting high premium on education because of its importance in inculcating and molding the minds, values and characters of the youth which are necessary in uplifting families and achieving sustainable and equitable development," Malones explained.
He said the AMVI has been supporting the Madrasah in the village of Taguiti in a form of allowance for their ustadz (teacher) "so that they can continue with their Educational Programs."
Madrasah is the Arabic word for school.
The village of Taguiti located 76.50 kilometers east of the city is one of secondary impact villages identified by the AMVI.
The mining firm has also extended educational assistance to the Day Care Center in Camp 147 by providing chalks, eraser, notebooks and pencils to the students aside from the support to the Madrasah in Taguiti.
It also extended educational assistance last year to Sta. Fe Elementary School in Sitio Sta. Fe in Barangay Vitali by renovating the school and provided chairs, blackboard, eraser and chalks for the school.
"This year, we are planning to institutionalize the company's support to education through the Adopt-A-School scheme," Malones added.
Alongside education, Malones said the AMVI's CDP also include sustainable livelihood, livelihood training and development, manpower technical skills training and development, sports and youth development, support for socio-cultural-religious development, community support, health and sanitation, community environmental programs and infrastructures.
