SECOND district Representative Lilia Nuño said she is in favor of the Department of Health's (DOH) proposal to make it mandatory for everyone to undergo testing for Human Immunodeficiency Syndrome-Acquired immune Deficiency Syndrome (HIV-Aids).

Nuño said the mandatory testing will be of great help especially for places like Zamboanga City, which serves as the backdoor of the country.

Nuño said the mandatory testing is very important especially for Zamboanga City "because of our being the entry point from Malaysia" since a commercial ferry plies weekly to and from that country via the city of Sandakan.

She noted that Malaysia and Indonesia, the country's southern backdoor neighbors, have high cases of HIV-Aids.

She said the good of the majority must be the first to be looked into although the rights of an individual should also be respected.

"Let us not talk about the violation of the human rights but let's think about the protection of the people," she said.

Nuño said that the mandatory testing is one way "we could control the increase of the number of cases since there is no cure yet for HIV-Aids." (Bong Garcia)
