THE Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), as part of its consumer empowerment efforts, is undertaking a project called consumer advocacy training of trainers (CATT) in the province of Zamboanga del Norte Provincial.

DTI-Zamboanga del Norte Director Noel Bazan said the project aims to create a local pool of resource persons who can work side by side with the agency in its information dissemination and advocacy campaigns on fair trade laws, consumer rights, and other consumer related matters.

“We see the need to develop consumer advocacy trainers coming from DTI accredited consumer organizations because we want to intensify awareness on consumerism. With only three personnel handling consumer welfare for the whole province, you will realize that the office can only do so much and so we need capacitated willing partners to become DTI’s force multipliers so that, together, we may be able to reach and serve more consumers,” Bazan said.

He said the Dipolog Consumer Watch Group, Incorporated (DCWGI) headed by Michael Malacca has partnered with the DTI on the CATT project and series of seminars were conducted for select members of DCWGI.

He said the seminars were held during Saturdays “so that they will not in any way affect the delivery of DTI services during weekdays.”

He said the Saturday seminar series will probably go on until September this year.

“By then, we expect the trainees to have mastered their respective topics in time for the conduct of intensified information campaign in schools and barangays during the National Consumers Month in October,” he added.
