FIVE people including four children were safely freed after a 12-hour hostage drama Wednesday that ended with the peaceful surrender of the hostage-taker, police said.
The hostages were identified as Shahani Farrah Señoron, 32, and her two daughters aged 13 and eight and two sons aged six and three.
The hostage drama started 10:25 a.m. Wednesday when Junrey Duhaylungsod, the suspect, and his live-in partner, Shahani, had a heated argument on how to discipline her children in their residence in Purok Mauswagon in the village of Turno, Dipolog City.
Upon receipt of report, the police in coordination with city and village officials initiated negotiations to prevent bloodshed.
The suspect released the 13-year-old daughter of Shahani around 10:30 p.m. as the team of negotiators managed to convince the suspect to release one of the hostages.
The police said negotiations continued that resulted to the release of the other three children 30 minutes later.
Further negotiation continued for the release of Shahani and the suspect finally surrendered peacefully around 11:30 p.m., the police said.
Confiscated from the suspect’s possession was a 24-centimeter hunting knife.
The suspect was detained while appropriate charges are being readied to be filed against him, the police said.
