A SOLDIER was killed in a gun attack while another was injured in a clash with insurgents in the Zamboanga Peninsula, the police reported Sunday.
Police Regional Office-Zamboanga Peninsula (PRO-9) Spokesman Senior Inspector Joseph Ortega identified the slain soldier as Sergeant (Sgt.) Hanapia Marhus of the Army’s 53rd Infantry Battalion.
Wounded was Private First Class (PFC) Richard Jimenez of the Army’s 10th Infantry Battalion.
Ortega said Marhus was killed around 11:30 a.m. Saturday in the village of Ocapan, San Miguel, Zamboanga del Sur.
Ortega said that Marhus was driving motorcycle on the way to the detachment coming from a meeting when shot by one of two New Peoples’ Army (NPA) rebels riding tandem on another motorcycle that accosted the soldier.
Ortega said Marhus sustained multiple gunshot wounds and died on the spot while rebels escaped.
Meanwhile, Jimenez was wounded in a firefight that broke out around 4:25 p.m. Saturday at Sitio Taysan in the village of Midatag, Leon Postigo, Zamboanga del Norte.
Ortega said the Alpha Company troops of the Army’s 10th Infantry Battalion led by First Lieutenant Levie Bulawan were on combat operation when they chanced upon the NPA rebels.
He said the firefight lasted four about 20 minutes that resulted to the injury of Jimenez.
He said the NPA rebels fled to different directions. (Bong Garcia)
