TWO people, including a village official, were shot and wounded by another village official in a remote village of Zamboanga del Sur, the police said Sunday.

Police Regional Office (PRO)-Zamboanga Peninsula information officer-in-charge Inspector Dahlan Samuddin said the incident took place around 6:30 p.m. Saturday in the village of San Isidro, Pitogo.

Samuddin identified the victims as Jose Olaiz, 51, a village councilman of San Isidro, and Emelyn Manguilimotan, 37, the daughter of the suspect identified as Luis Romo.

Romo, 63, is the village chief of San Isidro. He voluntarily surrendered to the police.

Samuddin said investigation showed that Olaiz, along with some companions, was having a drinking spree at a store owned by Martiniano Ebal when the suspect arrived.

Romo confronted Olaiz, resulting in a verbal tussle between the two village officials, Samuddin said.

He said Olaiz and Romo grappled for possession after the suspect pulled out a caliber .357 magnum revolver and fired once into the air at the height of the heated argument.

He said Manguilimotan tried to pacify them but was instead shot when her father accidently squeezed the trigger of the handgun.

Meanwhile, he said Romo was able to hold back of his firearm and instantly shot Olaiz.

The victims were taken to the hospital while the suspect was detained pending the filing of appropriate charges against him, he said.

The motive of the incident was personal grudge, he added.
