Comelec: Only few PWDs register in Zambo City-A A +A
Tuesday, July 22, 2014
THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) registered a low turnout during the National Registration Day for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Zamboanga City.
Comelec officials said that only 10 PWDs have registered in the city’s two election districts last Sunday (July 20), which was declared as the National Registration Day for PWDs.
The Comelec, through an en banc resolution no. 14-0463 declared July 20 as National Registration Day for PWDs following a request from the National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA).
District 1 election officer, Lawyer Stephen Cañete, said Tuesday that six of the 10 PWDs have registered in his office while District II election officer Joseph Ian Tria said the remaining four registered with them.
The officials said that one of the factors that contributed to the low turnout of registration of PWDs last Sunday was the inclement weather brought about by Typhoon Glenda.
They also said that several PWDs have already registered when they conducted satellite voter’s registration in the barangays while the rest wanted to register as regular voters.
The two election officials said they will continue to accommodate PWDs who will come to the local Comelec office to register. (Bong Garcia)
