A TOP official of the National Economic and Development Authority (Neda) has advised those in the agriculture sector to avail of the government intervention to help boost their livelihood.

Neda Assistant Regional Director Susan Valerio issued the advice following observations that several farmers earn meager income since they just rely by marketing their raw farm products.

Valerio said she noted that farmers who are into mango farming are just selling the mango fruits during harvest season instead of thinking of producing value-added products.

Valerio added that among the value-added products of mango that command high prices are dried mango, mango juice and others.

To the farmers’ dismay they end up selling their produce in cheaper prices since there is an oversupply of mango fruits during harvest season, Valerio said.

She said among the government intervention they can avail are the Shared Service Facility (SSF) of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and technology intervention from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).

However, she said the farmers should be the ones to initiate in seeking intervention citing the concerned government agencies are there as the facilitators.

Valerio is optimistic the income of farmers will increase since they can come up with value-added products as they will have the technological knowledge as well as the facilities once they avail government intervention.
