Search on for 5 humanitarian heroes-A A +A
Saturday, August 9, 2014
THE United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN-OCHA)-Zamboanga Hub announced the search for the five humanitarian heroes of Zamboanga City.
City Hall Information Officer Sheila Belen Covarrubias said the search highlights the commemoration of World Humanitarian Day (WHD) 2014.
Covarrubias said the deadline for the submission of nominees for the five humanitarian heroes will be on Tuesday, August 12.
The UN-OCHA-Zamboanga Hub in partnership with the Mindanao Humanitarian Team (MHT) has tapped the assistance of three universities in this city--Ateneo de Zamboanga University (ADZU), Universidad de Zamboanga (UZ), and Western Mindanao State University (WMSU), whose student leaders are enjoined to submit nominations for Zamboangueño humanitarian heroes, according to Covarrubias.
The nominees could be anybody who performed humanitarian work based on four basic humanitarian principles: humanity, neutrality, independence and impartiality.
The form contains two main questions: Why did you choose this person as your humanitarian hero and please give three examples of the things the person has done which you think make him/her a humanitarian hero.
The nomination forms will evaluated and deliberated on August 13 at the OCHA-Zamboanga Hub office by a panel composed of representatives from OCHA, United Nations International Children Emergency Fund (UNICEF), United Nation High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), International Office for Migration (IOM), Community and Family Services International (CFSI) and Action Against Hunger (ACF) International.
Covarrubias said the awarding of winners will be on August 19 in fitting ceremonies to be organized by the UN-OCHA-Zamboanga Hub.
The WHD is being commemorated every August 19 of the year in honor of aid workers, who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
The WHD is a global event that commemorates the day in 2003 when the UN headquarters in Baghdad was bombed that killed 22 people. (Bong Garcia)
