LOCAL police operatives, together with the multi-agency Sea-Based Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force (SBATTF) personnel, have rescued eight would-be victims of human trafficking in Zamboanga City, the police reported Friday.

Zamboanga City police director Angelito Casimiro said the victims were rescued around 11:30 a.m. Thursday at an old hotel downtown.

Senior Superintendent Casimiro said the rescue came after his command received information that a group of newly-recruited workers bound for Malaysia had arrived in the city.

Casimiro identified five of the eight rescued would-be victims as Dennis Lukenario, 19; Adrianne Balde, 18; Roldan Morados, 22; Alfredo Pahialgao, 22; and, Aljun Jimenez, 19.

He withheld the identities of the other three who are all minors.

Casimiro said they were recruited in the municipality of Siay, Zamboanga Sibugay, to work in Malaysia.

They were turned over to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) while investigation continues to unmask the recruiter, Casimiro said.

Thursday’s rescue was the second human trafficking attempt that was foiled this week by the local authorities.

On Monday, the SBATTF has intercepted at the local port 24 would-be human trafficking victims while they were about to board a commercial vessel bound of Malaysia.
