THE Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (Caap) is enhancing the capability of its Aerodrome Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) unit of the Zamboanga International Airport (ZIA).

The move came as the ARFF of the local Caap is set to receive two units of Oshkosh type of fire trucks worth P77 million.

Caap-Zamboanga ARFF Fire Marshall Michael Dela Cruz said the two fire trucks, which are manufactured in the United States of America (USA), are set to arrive by the first quarter of 2015.

He said the two fire trucks form part of the 41 units of Oshkosh fire trucks Caap has purchased from the US.

The other Oshkosh units will be distributed to the other airports in the country.

Dela Cruz said the arrival of the two new fire trucks will further boost the firefighting capability of the local ARFF, since they will have a total of four firefighting apparatus.

He said one of the two fire trucks they have is under rehabilitation.

With the two units available, Dela Cruz said they are expected to send personnel to the US to train on how to operate properly the Oshkosh fire trucks.

Last week, 35 Caap personnel detailed at ZIA underwent a five-day rescue and firefighting training in Zamboanga City. (Bong Garcia)
